Carlisle Fairtrade

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers around the world. Fairtrade is simply a different way of trading and shopping.  Look out for the Fairtrade Mark on products and labels and in shops and cafés. There are now more than 4,000 high quality products available in the UK from bananas and coffee to clothing and flowers, many of which are on sale in Carlisle.

For more information about the Fairtrade campaign visit The Fairtrade Foundation or contact us for to find out more about Fairtrade in Carlisle.

Carlisle Fairtrade last secured the renewal of Carlisle as a Fairtrade City in 2019 and we are working towards our next renewal in 2024. We work continuously to raise the profile of Fairtrade across Carlisle District, including ensuring that Fairtrade food, drink and snacks are available in local cafés and restaurants and encouraging businesses, workplaces, schools and community groups and churches.

Carlisle has an active Fairtrade Schools Network which carries out a range of activities together and which are supported by volunteer champions who undertake awareness raising and educational activities.

Each year we undertake a range of events and activities to mark Fairtrade Fortnight which will be held between 9th and 22nd September 2024 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Fairtrade mark.

The main dedicated Fairtrade outlet in the city is the Carlisle World Shop, a Fairtrade shop for a Fairtrade city, which we encourage local people to support.

In addition we are members and supporters of the Cumbria Fairtrade Network.
